"Everyday have a purpose, and never give up."
Holly began dancing at the age of 3 and competitively dancing at the age of 8. It didn't take her long before she discovered her love for the art of movement and took up teaching at a young age of 14 back in her hometown in the Quad Cities. As a senior, Holly placed third at the National Collegiate Level at Illinois State. She has trained with various choreographers and companies including Urban Movement, Hip Hop ConnXion, Sweet 16, and The Puzzle League. Currently, she choreographs for her hometown studio and volunteer teaches Creative Movement at Breakthrough Urban Ministries through her connection from APA, helping those who may have not otherwise had the opportunity to experience and explore movement.
Holly first became a member of Ascension Performing Arts in 2016, and has since worked her way up to being the Co-Director of the dance company. Holly graduated from Illinois State Univeresity with a Bachelor in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management and a Minor in Dance Performance. In the future, she aspires to open a dance studio where she can continue her path of inspiring and mentoring youth.
why this cause matters to the artist
Expressing your beliefs and speaking up for yourself & those around you can be one of the toughest things in such a grey world. This piece I am creating is to remind those that may be experiencing something similar; you're never alone. No matter what you're going through in life, there is so much beauty to be recognized throughout your struggles. In such a great capacity of evil and misery in this world, "All we need is hope and for that we have each other" - Andra Day says this in her lyrics.
The arts, although dance specifically, have made me who I am today. Like many, I have been through so many highs and lows because that's life right? But there is one thing that has always remained constant for me: dance. Dance is one of the brightest lights in my life. Those that have come along my artistic adventures are some of the most important people I have in my life (and I don't see that ever changing!) I hope to continue living out my passion and sharing my knowledge and experiences with my peers and youth by teaching and performing. Dance will always be my choice of coping with my feelings - frustrations and happiness, my way of communication and most importantly the most genuine way I've become in tune with my own mind, body and soul.
I hope to be a light for those around me today, tomorrow and everyday. It is important to remember, your journey to find strength will only make you stronger. If there's anything I want the audience to take away form my performance at the benefit it is; "Have a purpose everyday you wake up and never ever give up: be the light. You never know who else might be struggling too."
