Keith Sunahara is a native Chicagoan. He attended Illinois Institute of Technology under a Navy ROTC scholarship and graduated with an electrical engineering degree in 1981. While serving as an officer on a nuclear power fast attack submarine, Keith became a Christian in San Francisco CA. After leaving the Navy, Keith moved to Minneapolis to be an engineer at a nuclear power plant. After 7 years he moved to Lexington KY to marry Janice and complete a Master of Arts in Theological Degree at Asbury Theological Seminary. Keith and Janice moved to Chicago when Keith was accepted into the Christian Ethics PhD program at Loyola University. Unfortunately, Keith was unable to continue his PhD studies, but was able to start working for ComEd and has since worked as an engineer for the past 18 years.
In the last 2 years Keith was introduced to a son he unknowingly conceived when his submarine visited Subic Bay Philippines. Will’s entry into the Sunahara family has been a source of great blessings to all involved. The Sunahara family was introduced to the Chicago dance community when Will and Sereena came down for a visit. Since then Keith and Janice have enjoyed growing friendships with many wonderful dancers and always look forward to participating in the dance community’s activities.
Keith started learning to play the violin in 3rd grade. After graduating high school, he stopped lessons but picks up his violin when an opportunity presents itself. Keith was really excited to learn he could be a member of Ascension Performing Arts as an instrumentalist. Being part of Ascension allows Keith to use his musical training to be a participant in the dance community and express his Christian faith. Keith and Janice were also excited to learn that Ascension has a working relationship with Breakthrough Urban Ministries which Keith and Janice have supported for 20 years. Keith also enjoys photography and will be show casing some of his nature photographs at the Fall Benefit this year
