why this cause matters to the artist
This started as a way to be a voice. A piece that was so raw that it silenced audiences and brought tears to your eyes. It is so near to all of us, yet something so few of us admit because we are afraid that we are alone, unwanted, a “freak.” We have seen firsthand with teens their personal issues they were suffering from: not feeling pretty, accepted, beautiful, wanted, or ‘good enough.’ Believing that maybe if they starved themselves someone would like them and they would become important or noticed. We wanted to make a difference and be a voice. So we set a piece 1 week before our last competition and they left it all on the stage. This piece is a moment in my career as a director that has made me proud. After they came off stage, a girl - about 13-14yrs - came backstage and asked us, ‘who’s piece is this...who set this piece...who!!!’ I pointed to my two young choreographers. She proceeded to grab them in such a tight embrace, crying and saying ‘thank you…you said the words we all feel and are afraid to admit. I know I’m not alone.’ She then asked permission to hug the dancers and they were all crying. It’s difficult to watch, to experience, all of the emotional abuse we put ourselves through just to feel accepted, beautiful, or good enough.
